Minor Spoilers in this review but nothing that would spoil the book!
This is the terrifying story of two vampire brothers and the beautiful girl torn between them: Damon: determined to make Elena his queen of darkness, he'd kill his own brother to possess her. Stefan: desperate for the power to destroy Damon, he succumbs to his thirst for human blood. Elena: irresistibly drawn to both brothers, her choice will decide their fate.
Book 2 is a lot better than book 1, mainly because events happen and it's not just a bunch of teenagers talking. We see more of Damon, and Bonnie's powers are a focus point throughout the book.
The Struggle picks up right where The Awakening ends. Stefan is missing and Elena tracks down Damon to discover where he is. I have no idea what she thought she could do, considering he's a vampire but hey, idiotic choices are the norm right? I do still feel like Elena is annoying, and quite selfish in terms of her choices. Her 'death' wasn't a surprise either, and I hope that was intentional, because it was obvious at various points that she would eventually drive off the bridge. Stefan is still alright, I do find him to be slightly. I don't love their relationship, it feels very forced and too stereotypical, if that makes sense. I do like Elena's interactions with Damon and I feel like they have much more chemistry than 'Stelena'.
Damon is the best and most interesting character in the Struggle. He's wild and unpredictable. Damon is the typical 'bad vampire' but yet we also see glimpses of a softer aspect of his personality during the book. I do think he is what carries this book because I did lose interest when he wasn't in certain chapters.
All in all, the plot had good potential even though it had flaws, and I did like the sub-plot of Caroline and the diary. I would recommend if you are a fan of the TVD Show (although the show is MUCH better) and if you like vampires.
