There is need. And then there is Fate... Being destined to become some kind of supernatural electrical outlet isn’t exactly awesome—especially when Alexandria’s "other half" is everywhere she goes. Seth’s in her training room, outside her classes, and keeps showing up in her bedroom—so not cool. Their connection does have some benefits, like staving off her nightmares of the tragic showdown with her mother, but it has no effect on what Alex feels for the forbidden, pure-blooded Aiden. Or what he will do—and sacrifice—for her. When daimons infiltrate the Covenants and attack students, the gods send furies—lesser gods determined to eradicate any threat to the Covenants and to the gods, and that includes the Apollyon... and Alex. And if that and hordes of aether-sucking monsters didn’t blow bad enough, a mysterious threat seems willing to do anything to neutralize Seth, even if that means forcing Alex into servitude... or killing her. When the gods are involved, some decisions can never, ever be undone (GoodReads Blurb)
Ok. I take back what I said in my first review of Half-Blood. Yes, there were similarities but I feel like they are coincidences (please don't hate me) simply because this book doesn't take the same direction as VA did (aside from ONE instance - Alex wanting Aidan, Aidan backing off because forbidden love) and there's a lot of creativity introduced in book 2.
So, onto the review. I did read this in one sitting after it flew through my letterbox (thanks amazon for my 'Undeliverable' book) so it did hook me in straightaway. I'm glad I had the next one to read straightaway!
Seth annoys the hell out of me. I actually hate him. He give me Tamlin vibes and that's NEVER a good thing. I have an odd feeling that he's up to something with the way he is with Alex, I just can't work out what. I also don't like the whole possessiveness he has around Alex - he has no claim over her and all they have in common is the Apollyon connection thing.
Alex is still irrational in Pure, but we do see some growth near the end. We do see the consequences the events of the last book has had on her, and how she eventually processes that trauma. She starts to own up to her mistakes and accept who she is (and her scars). She has a long way to go - especially with the love triangle. I do think the love triangle is unnecessary BUT It's a unique one and I do love it. She also still has major anger issues. Alex also has to deal with her upcoming Awakening - which is starting early!!
The plot is quite simple, to be honest. It focuses on the repercussions of the last book - Alex has to face the Covenant Council and the Masters, while facing an unknown and invisible threat - and also fighting with Aidan and Seth all the time. The little hints throughout the book build up to the eventual event at the end of the book. However, we are also introduced to the Furies sent to defend the Covenant from Daimons and who could be unleashed by the gods at any point. We also finally see Sentinels, Aidan, Seth and Alex put their fighting skills to the test in the battle for their lives. I absolutely loved the ending, I had a feeling something like that would happen but it was absolutely brilliant. Oh, and we can't forget the mysterious Oracle!
Overall, I really did like the book and it's plot, as well at the tension throughout between the love triangle and it was definitely a book that brings out all the emotions! The only negative is that I could predict some things that could have been more subtly hinted at.
