When Edward Cullen and Bella Swan met in Twilight, an iconic love story was born. But until now, fans have heard only Bella's side of the story. At last, readers can experience Edward's version in the long-awaited companion novel, Midnight Sun.
This unforgettable tale as told through Edward's eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist. Meeting Bella is both the most unnerving and intriguing event he has experienced in all his years as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward's past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life. How can he justify following his heart if it means leading Bella into danger? (GoodReads Blurb)
I apologise in advance for the massive rant you are going to get.
So I was under the impression it would be more mature than twilight, and to me it really wasn't. It took me a month to read because I could only handle 50 pages a day. What got me the most was how creepy Edward is. The only reason I actually got this book in the first place is because it was on offer for a VERY low price and for the nostalgia.
So, let's start with the good. I enjoyed learning more about what happened with James during the basketball game (how any of them couldn't smell Bella) and what happened between the airport and finding Bella with James. I think this bit was the only totally 'new' information we got about Twilight from Edward's perspective. I did find myself actually enjoying those few chapters more than the rest of the book. I also enjoyed learning more about the Cullen family, especially Emmet and his snarky comments
And now the bad.
The writing. The writing itself is fine, but the structure is not. We are pretty much hearing every single thought Edward has and not much plotline. I lost interest quite a bit because page after page would just be Edward saying why he can't resist her blood, and why he can't stop thinking about her, etc. I think I would've enjoyed it more if this had been cut down quite a bit. I also found the fun personality in Twilight didn't transfer over to Midnight Sun. They had a good banter but in this book what he thinks is not what he says, and there is no personality to him. It felt really weird and just didn't match up.
Edward is creepy. I was always Team Edward but after reading Midnight Sun the creepy factor is sky high. I mean, I know he spent nights watching her but seriously? Every. Single. Night. Watching her from the woods getting ready to go to school. He could not leave her alone for even a minute - he was literally always watching. I wish I hadn't read it because I now can't read Twilight the same. I also felt like the plot of twilight got lost, as if the author forgot it was Twilight in Edward's POV. The scenes felt like they were dumped in at random intervals.
Overall, I didn't really enjoy it and if anyone wants my book to burn I'll happily give it to you!
